Engine Speed Sensor G28

G28
The engine speed sensor is an inductive pickup. The sensor is located on the left side of the engine block by the flywheel.

It senses the 135 teeth of the starter ring gear. The MPI control unit receives one voltage pulse for every tooth on the flywheel.

This voltage signal from the speed sensor is used by the MPI control unit to determine engine speed.

The MPI control unit also uses this signal to calculate the ignition firing point and injection point.

Example

(Ring gear teeth count * 2 crankshaft revolutions)/(number of cylinders)

= 270/6 = 45 teeth, or 120° crankshaft revolution

The engine speed sensor position is adjusted at the factory. If the sensor bracket is removed, mark the position of the bracket on the engine block.
G28
Substitute Function

No substitute function for the engine speed sensor is available.

Self-diagnosis

The ECU recognizes a missing signal after five seconds of cranking or engine operation.

If the signal is not received by the ECU, the engine will not start.
